Behind the Scenes at Portland Fashion Week!

Once again I am very late getting to this blog post, as Fashion week was almost 3 weeks ago. What a fun experience overall! Everyone working with or for PFW was very friendly, helpful and professional. It felt good to have your hard work in good hands.
Having agreed to participate in PFW very late, I had about 3 weeks to produce my collection virtually from nothing. That is 3 weeks to concieve, shop for, pattern and sew. The collection entailed 15 pieces, both dresses and separates. This was a push for me, considering I do all of the above mentioned work myself. Needless to say, I was working on the pieces up until and including the day of the show. At the last minute, wouldn’t ya know it, I had to make a new top. I had planned to screen print some of my artwork onto t-shirt, but, sadly, that absolutely was not working out. These things always happen, right? So, in its stead, I made a lovely flutter-sleeve silk top. Strangely (or maybe not), this last “last minute” piece ended being one of my favorites.
Overall, the show went smoothly, as there were no major mishaps. Everyone got their clothes on and no zippers burst. That is my worst nightmare to have a zipper break while doing a quick change for the runway. Anyway, with no nightmares, things went smoothly. Overall, the only disappointment was the speed of the model changes from designer to designer didn’t allow for custom hair and makeup. I was a little bummed out as I saw this styling to be central to my collection. The models were literally running off stage, dressing and running back on the runway. It was very difficult to even adjust the clothing in time. Anyway, everyone was very nice and we all worked through it. Not perfect, but no major problems either. I am thankful for that. Now, I just have to get it to you in the spring!! Many of the designs will come in other fabrics and colors. So, hopefully, I will have something to suit you perfecting come Spring 2011.
I leave you with more pictures from the show. Enjoy!!!

Well, I have really done it this time. I have gone and signed myself up for another big project. Right now it looks like I will have some late nights this week just to have the garments in a state appropriate for the fitting this Sunday. I am excited about fashion week and it has forced me to complete the Spring 2011 collection, but it is still a lot of work.
Having said that though, I am really pleased with the direction of the spring collection. Actually, I am quite thrilled. The inspiration behind it is “little boys.” I have two little boys, so I know a thing or two about the human variety. The concept, however, goes beyond that. Think A-bomb, ash, demise thrown in for good measure. I know we have had some good times here at the shop conceiving all kinds of madness for the collection that wouldn’t actually fly, but, nonetheless, fun to toss around. Anyway, I must go to make the next dress. I will give more updates and maybe even some previews.
Would love to see all of you there. I will be showing in Friday Oct. 8, if you want to buy tickets. Having said that, there are many great designers presenting, so any night would be a treat. Portland Fashion Week tickets.
